R2 Dinner for 2? - Tech for Staff Shortages in Hospitality

Cat O’Neil

This summer, this hospitality sector was amid a paralysing staffing crisis. There have not been enough applicants to fill the job opportunities in the industry. Not only did this diminish the service to customers and visitors, but it severely restricted the ability of hotels and restaurants to operate. The sector needs to address the long-term threat of permanent vacancies, a challenge unlikely to wane in the face of changing demographics.

What role can robotics and AI play in easing the staffing crisis in the hospitality industry?
Can existing or new technology be used to improve conditions for existing employees?

Our research report “R2 Dinner for 2” explores these questions.

Our findings indicate that technology will no longer be a marginal efficiency tool for businesses in the hospitality and leisure industry but a central pillar to their success as they adapt to permanent vacancies in key roles.

We identify tech solutions that assist in scheduling, training, and management as vital to the sector’s future. Our research identifies an acute need to help small businesses, which often lack the financial resources, implementation support or training time to explore tech solutions.

As well as implementing existing technology, we note that the hospitality industry needs to develop stronger research and development partnerships to address future challenges and bring innovations to market.
